Epilogue
****
Comment: Here we are with the final campaign of Brood War. It's been over a year since I started my commentary of the two titles, so excuse me for taking so long, but unfortunately that's just the way things have been with my spare time. With that aside, let's crack on.
The zerg campaign, much like with "Overmind" for the previous zerg campaign, is named after Kerrigan's self-styled title. As with The Frozen Throne, the expansion for WarCraft 3, the finale has a faction leader with a reduced powerbase, which gives way for a courageous comeback. This sets up a great challenge for the the player to take on and, naturally, it is dramatic. In this instance, Kerrigan has to take on the UED, both its expeditionary fleet and the broods of their pet Overmind, hence the title 'Brood War'. Up until this point there hasn't been much zerg against zerg action so it's about time. Kerrigan ends up using or treading on the feet of almost every faction in the Koprulu Sector - either because she needs to or because she just can.
Incidentally, in my discussions with Rommel about StarCraft, he suggested where the names for the main zerg cerebrates, Daggoth and Zasz, could be derived:
'Dagoth' is a character in the Marvel comics universe and also the movie Conan the Destroyer. It's also the combination of 'Dagon' and 'Shoggoth', names from the works of HP Lovecraft, who perhaps in turn took Dagon from the Semitic god. There's also 'Dagoth Ur', the main antagonist in the game The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind, though it was released well after the original StarCraft.
Meanwhile, Zasz may be derived from serial killer Victor Zsasz, one of Batman's many enemies.
PROLOGUE :
The forces of the United Earth Directorate
have taken control of the planet Char and
enslaved the ravenous broods of the fledgling
Overmind. With the Directorate's powerful Psi
Disrupter negating Kerrigan's control over the
remaining broods, the UED remains
uncontested in its domination of the sector.
Kerrigan, having sought out a band of unlikely
allies, now plans to destroy the Psi Disrupter
and sever the UED's control of the Overmind.
Comment: The prologue seems quite short compared to the others, but there has been enough set up leading to the campaign as it is. It's practically a reminder for people who finished the Terran campaign and didn't immediately start the zerg one. There's no need for an explanation of who actually is part of Kerrigan's band of 'unlikely allies' simply because they're introduced in a few moments.
XZ-01. "VILE DISRUPTION"
Kerrigan's Fortress, on the planet Tarsonis
Comment: A fortress, not a central base or 'headquarters' or anything - I suppose it gives off a more menacing impression.
Mission Briefing
Objectives :
- Rescue all hives from destruction
Kerrigan :
Greetings, Cerebrate. By now you've
realized that I've severed your
connection with the Overmind and
your renegade brethren.
Understand, it's nothing personal. I
just can't risk you falling under
their influence. You're mine now.
Serve me unquestioningly, and I'll let
you live.
Comment: The player character doesn't appear to be the same cerebrate from the Overmind campaign - I'm sure Kerrigan would recognise it, as far as you can recognise a giant brain at least, though I suppose psychic powers would likely help identify it. I used to think that the first Executor character in episode 3 was the same as in 4, since there was no explanation they weren't and presumably the Protoss were few in number as it was. As it turns out, apparently Artanis was the Executor in episode 3 and the one in episode 4 is a new player character. I suppose this means that the player is always a new character at the start of a campaign.
Incidentally, does this mean the player in Wings of Liberty won't be the former Magistrate from episode 1? I imagine not, or it may be left wide-open and slightly ambiguous, particularly for the sake of new players. It's a shame as I think a persistent player character like in RTS games is a good 'hook' for people to keep playing. The player's General in Command & Conquer: Generals and the Force Commander in Dawn of War 2 spring to mind as examples, though they primarily exist for statistics and abilities. Will we always have mute, faceless player characters in RTS games?
There aren't too many options for the zerg player character in terms of 'direction' but Kerrigan severing the connection and forcing it to work for her makes sense.
Duran :
My Queen, pardon me for
interrupting, but the visitors you
have been expecting have arrived.
Comment: Duran is always courteous to Kerrigan, which I think is a good method for fortifying his betrayal, showing that he strung along the top leaders of the UED fleet while serving her so, as well as her persona as queen of the zerg. I suppose she also needs someone to speak to as well, the player character being the only cerebrate she has apparently 'liberated'.
Despite the revelation about who Duran is (Or what he is) being thrown up much later in the campaign, in a secret level no less, and that it's not part of the immediate plot, it in turn makes that even more of a surprise. After one character twist is revealed, another isn't always expected.
Kerrigan :
Finally. They certainly took their
time.
Raynor :
Yeah, well none of us were in any
real hurry to get here, Sarah.
Comment: So, in case there was any doubt, this is confirmation that, back in Emperor's Fall, Raynor was talking about Kerrigan when he mentioned a 'mutual acquaintance'.
Most people call her Kerrigan so I wonder if Raynor calls her 'Sarah' or 'Kerrigan' based on the circumstances? Probably not.
Kerrigan :
Still suspicious of my motives,
Jimmy?
Raynor :
Always.
Comment: She did spare Jim's life back on Char, but she is now the main controller of the Swarm (excluding the new Overmind). Maybe he heard about what she did on Shakuras? Or even what she did to the UED?
Kerrigan :
Heh. When I contacted you both on
Aiur, I told you about the new
Overmind and about the UED that
seeks to control it. Well, the UED
has done it. They've tamed the
Overmind and now control most of
the Zerg broods in this sector.
That's why I've asked for your help.
Comment: This was when Fenix and Raynor were left at the warp gate back at the start of the Protoss campaign. Maybe Kerrigan targeted them when they were both alone to prevent any other opinions interrupting her plan? I suppose there's even room for the writers to suggest she was controlling or manipulating the zerg on Aiur - then again, maybe Kerrigan has done enough of that in the expansion as it is.
Fenix :
You want us to help you defeat the
UED so that you alone will rule the
Zerg!
Comment: Fenix - as subtle as a sledgehammer!
Kerrigan :
Wrong, Fenix. I want to defeat
them because if we don't, they'll
clamp down on this sector, and
enslave us all! You know I'm right
Jim. You've studied the history of
Earth, you know what the UED's
agenda is. Taking control of the
Zerg is only the beginning for them.
Raynor :
Maybe... I don't know...
Comment: Since at least with facist governments, you know where you stand with them...
It's arguably true, though in retrospect we know Kerrigan is lying - she does need their help to counter the UED, but ultimately she does want to rule the zerg absolutely and is using her allies for all they're worth.
While it's not some real moral conundrum for the player to deeply consider, in a way Raynor has to choose between humanity's assured survival in the sector against all of the aliens (But one ruled by the tyrannical UED, which has no problem AT ALL with genocide) and one in which the Koprulu Terrans are just another vulnerable faction amongst many other dangerous ones.
In my 'New World' theory, I suppose it would be like considering whether to support the British Empire conquering the rebel American colonies (with the notion that they'd continue to take the rest of the continent) or supporting the colonies and natives (Knowing they're on their own against other invaders, including the native inhabitants if they turn on them). This is a gross simplification of real world history, but I think it's possible to see a slight parallel there, even one an unintended one.
Duran :
My Queen, again I beg your pardon
for this interruption, but we have a
very serious problem!
Comment: "My Queen, the player needs a refresher level in playing as zerg before we proceed with the plot!"
It's true but at least it shows careful planning in the campaign structure.
Kerrigan :
Perfect timing... Gentlemen, we'll
need to finish this conversation
later... continue, Duran.
Comment: Overall, I suppose this is a decent way of elaborating some of the campaign's plot to the player, but not revealing all of it. It's much better than throwing them into a level when they're curious as to what's going on. It's a little bit of suspense - without it, slugging through the first level would be boring. We need to be slowly fed action and exposition!
Duran :
The Psi Disrupter's signal has
reached us here on Tarsonis and
shattered the unity of your broods!
Within the past few hours, your
minions have turned on each other
and left their hive clusters to run
out of control!
Kerrigan :
This is just what I need. Cerebrate,
take the few Zerg still under my
control and do what you can to
stem any further damage to the
hive clusters. I can't afford to have
them destroyed by my own minions!
Mission Start
*** Rescue the first hive cluster ***
DURAN
My Queen, the hive structures are not responding to the
Cerebrate's commands! There is no way to reinforce your
warriors!
KERRIGAN
Cerebrate, you'll have to make due with the warriors you have.
Slaughter the dissident Zerg in my name!
Mission End
Comment: I did make a note in the original zerg campaign that there was only one 'civil war' level, so I suppose the plot in Brood War allows for much more of it, like here.
XZ-02. "REIGN OF FIRE"
High orbit over the planet Braxis
Comment: Also the name of a 2002 action movie but Brood War preceded that by four years so I imagine the level title is simply a phrase made up by Blizzard. A reign being defined as "the term used to describe the period of a person's or dynasty's occupation of the office of monarch of a nation". Compare with the subtitle of WarCraft 3, 'Reign of Chaos', and a consequence of the French Revolution, the Reign of Terror.
Mission Briefing
Objectives :
- Destroy the Psi Disrupter
Kerrigan :
The Psi Disrupter is causing me
some very serious problems.
Although I've regained control of my
forces here, it's taking more and
more concentration just to keep
them in line.
Raynor :
Aww... My heart's breaking for you,
Kerrigan. Now exactly why was it
that you asked Fenix and I to bring
Mengsk to you?
Kerrigan :
Are you still suspicious that I'll kill
him for abandoning me to the Zerg?
I've gotten over it, Jim. We can't
afford to let petty hatreds
jeopardize our plans for the UED.
Comment: We saw her say similar things to the Protoss in their campaign, but, honestly, I think it's great that we're left guessing if Kerrigan is on the level or not. However, naturally, it's more dramatic for her to betray them, or at least to see the manner of it.
Mengsk :
That's reassuring.
Kerrigan :
Arcturus... I presume you found your
cold-sleep chamber...
accommodating?
Comment: Presumably that's a zerg stasis pod of some sort.
Mengsk :
What is the meaning of this,
Kerrigan?
Kerrigan :
Straight to the point, huh? I was
hoping to chat. It's been awhile.
Mengsk :
Not long enough. Why have I been
brought here?
Comment: Disregarding the circumstances, as we've already seen, I suppose one could say that Mengsk has completely changed from his fairly patient mannerism of the past, where he spent years carefully working against the Confederacy, while now he's an Emperor who is "drunk with power" and is very hasty.
There are shades of a classic saying here:
"Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely."
(Incidentally, here's the origin of the saying - I always thought it would be far older than 1870)
Emperors, kings and all sorts of other leaders who really have so much power that they change, they lose sight of their humble beginnings and goals. Look at practically any monarchy or dynasty in history and you'll probably see it to some degree, or simply see crime movies such as The Godfather or even Scarface.
Of course, it hasn't only happened to Mengsk but is gradually occurring to Kerrigan too. We later realise the extent of her power, which virtually begs the question 'Just because you can, does that mean you should?'.
Kerrigan :
I need your Psi Emmiters, Arcturus.
Mengsk :
Why?
Kerrigan :
Remember the Confederate Psi
Disrupter that you could never
find? Well, the UED found it. And
it's preventing me from controlling
my minions. With the help of your
Psi Emmiters, I can gather up enough
Zerg to destroy the Disrupter and
confront the UED.
Mengsk :
And what are you offering me in
return?
Kerrigan :
Hah. Ever the politician. All right,
'Emperor', if you help me destroy
the Disrupter, I'll help you retake
Korhal from the UED.
Mengsk :
Hmm... a tempting offer. What
assurances do I have of you fulfilling
your end of the bargain?
Comment: Seems like a good deal. The gain for each person is significant to them and not too difficult for the other to perform.
Kerrigan :
The only thing I can assure you of,
Arcturus, is that without my help,
you'll be the Emperor of your own
little eight by eight cell for the
rest of your life.
Comment: In other words, 'take it or leave it.'
Mengsk :
I see that you're still a persuasive
speaker. All right, Kerrigan. I'll lend
you some Emitters, but this had
better be worth it.
Comment: Really, he has no compassion for Kerrigan - he recognises her, even mentions she still has signs of her human character, but seems to have no remorse for what he did to her at all.
Mission Start
*** Beginning of the mission ***
RAYNOR
All right boys and girls, listen up! Our objective is
to locate and disable the Psi Disrupter's primary
power generator. Once we've done that, we'll
turn the mission over to Mengsk and Kerrigan.
Let's move out!
Comment: I'm unsure whether this section of the level was originally going to to be controlled by the player or not and maybe Blizzard canned that idea and instead had it as an in-game scene.
GHOST
I'm gone...
MARINE
Go! Go! Go!
Comment: It's always amusing (for the first time at least) to say the unit responses used in campaigns - but, really, I hope this sort of thing stays in the past.
RAYNOR
Kerrigan, the generator's off-line. You can send down the Psi
Emitters at any time.
KERRIGAN
Good work, Jim.
Comment: Here's a quick thought - it's interesting to see how we've almost came full circle with the characters - Raynor, Kerrigan and Mengsk are working together once again. How things have changed ...
MENGSK
The Psi Emitter will be carried by one of my SCV's. With the
Disrupter's power cut, the Emitter should be able to get the
attention of any renegade Zerg near it. The SCV will then be
able to lure the Zerg back to your base. Once the Zerg arrive
there, you'll be able to assert direct control over them.
*** Acquire at least 1 Zerg Drone using the Psi Emmitter ***
KERRIGAN
Perfect! With these Zerg I can construct a new hive cluster!
Once my forces have grown strong enough, I can assault the
Psi Disrupter directly!
*** Acquire Hunter Killer / Devouring One / Torrasque ***
KERRIGAN
Excellent work! Although these Zerg are now under my control, I
sense that there are more Zerg out there. We must lure as many
of them here as possible!
*** Have acquired all remaining scattered renegade Zerg ***
SCV
Um, with all due respect to Miss Kerrigan sir. These critters make
me nervous as hell. I sure would appreciate some immediate evac.
Comment: Can't say I blame him!
Mission End
XZ-03. "THE KEL-MORIAN COMBINE"
Command ship Hyperion, orbiting the planet
Moria
Comment: Anyone who has read the game's backstory or seen the faction names in multiplayer will know that there are many groups in the sector for each race. Tribes for the Protoss, Broods for the zerg, while Terrans have squadrons and some general factions which originated from the different worlds that the prison ships landed on. We never encountered any in the original StarCraft campaign so it's good that we finally do.
The name 'Morian' and the faction's status as a mining guild is likely a homage to the mine Moria in The Lord of the Rings. Incidentally, Blizzard also named a dwarven princess 'Moira' in World of WarCraft.
Mission Briefing
Objectives :
- Obtain 10,000 minerals
- Fenix must survive
Comment: Though it's obvious in retrospect of StarCraft, but too many missions became 'build and destroy' types where the player has to simply build up their forces and then exterminate the enemy bases, so it's good for things to get mixed up a little.
Fenix :
Now that the Psi Disrupter has
been destroyed and Kerrigan has
regained control of her minions, I
fear that she will forget our pact
and turn on us.
Raynor :
I know what you mean, Fenix. I'd love
to believe that she's on the level,
but there's a part of me that just
knows better. However, I do believe
that she's serious about taking out
the UED. The only real question left
is what happens to us when she
wins.
Mengsk :
If you ask me, she's completely
untrustworthy. But, so long as she'll
help me retake Korhal, I'll work with
her.
Raynor :
Shut up, Arcturus. If I wanted your
damn opinion, I would've beaten it
out of ya'. And in case you forgot,
you're the reason she became what
she is in the first place!
Comment: Awesome dialog. Things are left ambiguous regarding Kerrigan's long-term plans and we're left guessing.
Kerrigan :
You boys should really learn to play
nice with each other.
Fenix :
Kerrigan, are your forces ready to
assault Korhal as we planned?
Kerrigan :
Nearly. I still need a substantial
cache of resources in order to build
up my primary hive clusters. I'm
wondering if you gentlemen wouldn't
mind going on a fuel raid for me?
Raynor :
It sounds like you've already got a
plan. What are ya' thinkin'?
Kerrigan :
I'm thinking that we should pay the
Kel-Morian Combine a little visit.
Moria is one of the largest resource
nodes in the sector. If you can
bypass their defenses, and steal
enough resources from them, we'll
be able to afford a full-scale assault
on Korhal.
Raynor :
It's risky, but I think we can handle
it. Fenix, are you into this?
Fenix :
If it betters our chances, I will lead
the assault myself.
Comment: Fenix is still awesome. He's almost like a Protoss version of 80s Arnold Schwarzenegger. "Git to da wurp gate!"
Raynor :
Great. Let's get moving.
Duran :
Do you think they suspect anything,
my Queen?
Kerrigan :
Of course. They aren't stupid,
Duran. They're siding with the evil
they know over the evil they don't...
They simply don't yet realize what
it will cost them.
Comment: Or maybe Kerrigan's plans are not so ambiguous. The player likely cares more for Fenix and Raynor (but not Mengsk) so this is going to leave them uneasy for sure. Oh, the inevitable tragedy...
"They're siding with the evil they know over the evil they don't..." - really? Kerrigan already asked Raynor if he knew what the UED were like and he did say he wasn't certain. I guess it's because it's uncertain what the UED's reign of the sector would be like exactly.
Duran at least knows what her plans are, but I think he's playing dumb, likely to lower any suspicion.
Mission Start
*** Beginning of the mission ***
KERRIGAN
Cerebrate, I want you to infest as many Terran command
centers as possible. Once they're infested, we'll be able
to use them in our coming assault on Korhal.
OPTIONAL MISSION OBJECTIVE
- Infest command centers for next mission
Comment: Like the Terran campaign's choice to disable nuclear missiles or battlecruisers, it's neat to see another choice for the player. The command centres they infest are carried over to the next map. This is another thing I hope we see more of in StarCraft 2 and other RTS games.
*** Destroying enemy base near start location ***
FENIX
It is difficult to believe that I am working along
side my greatest enemy in order to save this sector.
Fortune has been whimsical of late.
RAYNOR
You sound like a tired old man, Fenix!
FENIX
Don't let the fact that I am three hundred and sixty eight
years older than you dull your impression of me, young
Raynor. I can still... how do you Terrans say it...
"Throw down with the best of them!"
RAYNOR
I stand corrected.
Comment: Brilliant. Really, it cements our impression of the duo's relationship. They're both fighters who respect one another. It's a shame we don't see too much of it, but when we do it then it's great.
*** Build a Hatchery ***
KERRIGAN
Remember, Cerebrate, we'll need at least ten thousand
units of crystals to maintain the hive clusters. Don't come
back with anything less!
*** Infest / Destroy first Command Center ***
FENIX
It is strange that this Kel-Morian Combine continues to
operate while the UED grips the Dominion with an iron
fist. I'll never underestimate the motivational effects of
Terran greed again!
Comment: Whereas the Protoss (aside the split between the Khalai Protoss and the Dark Templar) are relatively united and fight for a common goal, and the zerg are bound to their masters will, it's clear to Fenix that humans are fragmented. I'm sure there's a lot that could be said about isolationism here but I'll leave it at that.
*** Infest / Destroy another Command Center ***
FENIX
I prefer large scale battles over these covert missions.
My heart longs for the epic struggles of my youth, to
go into battle alongside my Protoss brethren again. Ah,
but time will tell all things.
Comment: It's like the writers are building up or reminding us of Fenix's character once more.
*** Accumulate 10,000 minerals, or infest / destroy all Command Centers ***
FENIX
Kerrigan, we have reached our resource quota, and will
be returning to Tarsonis.
Mission End
XZ-04. "THE LIBERATION OF KORHAL"
High orbit over the UED capitol world, Korhal
Comment: I guess that because Mengsk had it as his capitol world then the UED has based themselves out of Korhal as well. Most of the other Terran worlds are either in ruin or are not (presumably) as central as Korhal.
Mission Briefing
Objectives :
- Destroy all enemy bases
Kerrigan :
You have all performed superbly.
Especially you, Fenix. My hive
clusters are brimming with energy
and my broods are stronger than
ever.
Mengsk :
Then let's waste no time! Every
moment we sit here means that
the UED's defenses will be that
much stronger! And I want nothing
to stand between us and the
retaking of my planet!
Kerrigan :
You're right, Arcturus. The time to
strike the UED is now. But
remember that we're up against
one of the most heavily defended
planets in the sector. Laying siege
to Korhal won't be easy. Not only
does the UED control a substantial
standing army, but may have Zerg
reinforcements as well.
Raynor, you and Fenix will strike at
the more outlying fortification, while
my forces are busy assaulting the
main UED base at Augustgrad.
Mengsk :
We've discussed this plan a hundred
times! Commence the damn attack!
Comment: Mengsk is just absolutely desperate to get back into power, he really is a megalomaniac. He's not quite delusional about being Emperor (in misrepresenting reality to what he wants it to be) but he wants to return to power more than anything.
Kerrigan :
Hah... Very well, Arcturus. Before
the next sunrise, Korhal will be
yours once again.
Mission Start
*** Attacked by UED Ultralisk ***
KERRIGAN
As I suspected... The UED has sent its pet Zerg to reinforce
their troops. But strangely enough, there aren't very many
Zerg attacking. Maybe the UED is having more difficulty
controlling the Overmind than I thought?
*** Destroy all enemy bases ***
KERRIGAN
Excellent work, my Cerebrate! The UED's defenses are broken. Arcturus, you
may take possesion of this world with my blessings.
MENGSK
Don't be snide, Kerrigan. This was part of the deal, remember? I've earned
this... I am Emperor of the Dominion again. I'll be sending General Duke to
establish my base of operations in Augustgrad.
Comment: I'm not exactly sure why Blizzard seem to be making a point of his obsession with being Emperor, probably just to show how much he has changed from his humble beginnings and I suppose it is exactly how he'd act.
There's also a quick reminder that Duke is around - and so prominent that he's Mengsk's main military figure.
KERRIGAN
I hope you make the most of your reign...
Mission End
XZ-05. "TRUE COLORS"
Outskirts of Augustgrad
Early morning
Comment: If you didn't know, the level title is a phrase that refers to someone revealing their actual intentions and character. It probably comes from naval use, where ships would fly different national colours (based on a flag) and pirates would use fake colours to get closer to their prey. At least, someone on AnswerBag says so and I reckon it's very likely true.
And unlike most other mission title screens, we're even told that it's early morning, to show the element of surprise that is taking place.
Mission Briefing
Objectives :
- Destroy the enemy bases
- Kill Duke
- Kill Fenix
Comment: As soon as a player sees the objectives, they know what they have to do. Duke may be grossly disliked already, but having to personally kill Fenix? Ouch. I'm reminded of the 'scene' in WarCraft 2 where you witness Lothar die (which was obviously very basic but still a memorable scene), but this time the player will be personally carrying it out.
Kerrigan :
Cerebrate, Duran, the time has
come to separate the chaff from
the wheat. Now that the UED's
power base is broken on this world,
only their forces on Char pose any
significant threat to me. It's time
to move to the second phase of my
plan.
Comment: Just to continue with my explaination of sayings, to 'separate the chaff from the wheat' means to separate the worthless from the useful, in short - chaff being the 'inedible, dry, scaly protective casings of the seeds of cereal grain'. Surprisingly to myself, its roots are not in medieval farming but rather the Bible.
Duran :
And what of your allies here on
Korhal, my Queen? What would you
have done with them?
Kerrigan :
They are of no further use to me.
Though they have proven
themselves useful, it might be
dangerous to allow them to live.
Without the services of General
Duke, Mengsk will be easy to deal
with. But Raynor and Fenix are
uncannily resourceful. They must all
be eradicated. Cerebrate, I want
both General Duke's and Fenix's
bases destroyed. Leave no one
alive.
Comment: Would it really be that dangerous? They're just single individuals after all, however capable. Maybe Kerrigan is insecure, or maybe it's yet again more good drama?
Duran :
My Queen, if I may suggest a
strategy? Both the Protoss and
Terran forces are resting after our
previous victory. If we attack
immediately, while most of them are
asleep and unaware, we can whittle
down their defenses with relative
ease!
Kerrigan :
Clever. How long after our initial
attack can we expect them to
regroup and retaliate?
Duran :
I'd say in 6 minutes.
Kerrigan :
That only gives us enough time to
launch a surprise attack against one
base. But it is a sound plan.
Cerebrate, feel free to launch your
initial attack against either base.
Failure is not an option. Slaughter
them all in my name!
Comment: There's another mission like this in The Frozen Throne and they're good in forcing the player to make a tactical choice and get a head start in destroying either of their enemies.
Mission Start
*** Beginning of the mission (surprise attack) ***
CIVILIAN:
What's up?
CIVILIAN:
How y'all doin?
*** 6 minutes after initial attack ***
MARINE:
All units prepare for retaliation! Kerrigan caught us with
our pants down, but it's time to start givin' some back!
Comment: And the phrase 'caught with your pants down' surely needs no explanation ... though it may come across as being more obscene to a person in the United Kingdom than elsewhere.
KERRIGAN:
Continue your attack, Cerebrate. Their defenses won't
last long against us.
*** Encounter with Fenix ***
FENIX:
This is betrayal, most foul, Kerrigan! We were fools to
have gone along with this charade!
KERRIGAN:
You're right, Fenix. I used you to get the job done, and
you played along just like I knew you would. You Protoss
are all so headstrong and predictable, you are your own
worst enemies.
Comment: Kerrigan has already done this to the main Protoss on Shakuras and now she has done it again. She's completely used them.
FENIX:
That's ironic. I can remember Tassadar teaching you a
very similar lesson on Char.
KERRIGAN:
I took that lesson to heart, Praetor. Now, are you ready
to die a second time?
Comment: I guess that she has took that lesson to heart. Back on Char, in the first zerg campaign, Tassadar taught it to Kerrigan, that being predictable means you can be your own worst enemy since your actions can eventually lead to you unwittingly harming yourself.
However, it wasn't Fenix's direct actions that lead to this - Kerrigan is the direct cause. I think there's a difference between one inadvertently wandering into peril and another causing it upon someone.
FENIX:
The Khala awaits me, Kerrigan. And although I am
prepared to face my destiny, you'll not find me
easy prey!
KERRIGAN:
Then that shall be your epitaph.
Comment: An epitaph is, as we all know, a short piece of text on a gravestone.
("I told you I was ill" - Spike Milligan)
*** Kill Fenix ***
RAYNOR:
Fenix! No!
KERRIGAN:
What are you about worried, Jim? He died the way all
Protoss hope to: in combat!
Comment: Is that all she knows of the Protoss with regards to dying?
RAYNOR:
He died because you betrayed him. How many noble
souls do you need to consume before you're satisfied?
How many more people need to die before you realize
what you've become?
KERRIGAN:
You don't even know what you're talking about, Jim!
Comment: Is that really all she has to say? I think she's acting on instinct and isn't particularly thinking about her actions.
Jim's right - Kerrigan caused the battle that resulted in Fenix getting killed. It wasn't a natural death, in a sense - it was by her doing. She used her free will to decide that it should happen.
His other comments are particular biting, almost as if he's prepared them for this very instance. Based on his conflicted feelings for her, maybe he hasn't been able to imagine it, but now he has to face the facts.
When is enough actually enough for Kerrigan? Is she killing for killing's sake now? She has that much power that, it goes without saying, it's hard to have a limit and know when to let go.
RAYNOR:
Don't I? I'll see you dead for this, Kerrigan. For Fenix
and all the others who got caught between you and
your mad quest for power!
KERRIGAN:
Tough talk, Jimmy. But I don't think you have what it
takes to be a killer.
Comment: ... What? Raynor isn't a killer? We've personally commanded him to kill members of every species in the original Terran campaign!
Seriously, I'm not sure why she says that - either the script writer lapsed in concentration, or it's intentional, which means that Kerrigan's attempts to argue are simply weak.
If it's the former, I think it would have been better for her to take a jab at Raynor's feelings for her, whether or not he's gotten over her (as much as you can with a woman who has been infested and twisted beyond belief by an alien power, anyway). Raynor has finally shifted from being suspicious of Kerrigan to downright hating her. Things have really changed now.
RAYNOR:
It may not be tomorrow, darlin'. It may not even happen
with an army at my back. But rest assured: I'm the man
who's going to kill you some day. I'll be seein' you.
Comment: Kick ass.
This is actually the last we see of Raynor (though he is briefly mentioned in the epilogue to the campaign) but it's as good an exit as could be imagined for the long-term story.
From here he leads his band of men, Raynor's Raiders, around the sector, eventually coming to the point of barely getting by through the trading of archeological artefacts, before falling into alcoholism and depression. Presumably, one of the main dramatic moments of Wings of Liberty will be Raynor picking himself up and returning to his old form. Here's hoping...
*** Encounter Duke ***
DUKE:
Well, well, well. If it isn't little Kerrigan. I had a feelin'
we'd be meetin' each other again. You've got a lot to
answer for, little girl.
Comment: Duke at his usual best - patronising and somewhat with authority. At least his character is consistent.
KERRIGAN:
General Duke. You know I always wanted to have you
killed. This is kind of exciting for me.
Comment: Kerrigan never did like Duke back when she was in the Sons of Korhal, but not to the extent of wanting to murder him.
DUKE:
Do your worst then, girl. You ain't takin' Edmund Duke
without a fight!
Comment: I'm surprised this isn't a quote from a John Wayne movie (Feel free to prove me wrong), but it's exactly what I'd expect from Duke. Despite his last array of defeat, he's still determined to fight.
*** Kill Duke ***
MENGSK:
Kerrigan, you murdering bitch! We had a deal!
KERRIGAN:
Oh, come on, Arcturus. Did you really think I'd allow you
to come into power again? You practically fed me to the
Zerg on Tarsonis! You're directly responsible for the hell
I've been through! Did you honestly think I'd let you get
away with that?
Comment: Does Kerrigan like it or not? Back in "Agent of the Swarm" she told Raynor:
"I'm one of the Zerg, now. And I like what I am. You can't imagine how this feels..."
Even though this was when she was bound to the Overmind's will, she still had free will of a sort. Is she just conflicted on the inside or what?
MENGSK:
But you said revenge was secondary to defeating
the UED!
KERRIGAN:
I lied. I liberated this planet because it was the UED's
primary staging point, not because I was under any
obligation to you. I used you to destroy the Psi Disrupter.
And now that I've got my Broods back, you're no longer
necessary for my plans. I think I'll leave you here,
Arcturus, among the ashes of your precious Dominion.
I want you to live to see me rise to power. And I want
you to always remember in your most private moments
that it was you who turned me loose in the first place.
Comment: She used the Protoss and Raynor, then she used Mengsk (even though she did need his psi emitters) and this shows she had it all planned out.
Leaving Mengsk to live is meant to be a prolonged torture for him. Indeed, as another emperor put it:
“Death is nothing, but to live defeated and inglorious is to die daily.” - Napoleon Bonaparte
As it turns out, Mengsk does rebuild his Dominion, quite successfully based on the media for StarCraft 2 that I've seen, but I suppose it would be boring if he didn't. Meanwhile, after Brood War, Kerrigan and her zerg go silent for around four years.
(Also, I can't help but imagine that first line is a reference to this scene in Commando.
Here's the full scene in a broader context - or if you just like 80s action movies then just get yourself the whole movie)
*** Destroy all enemy bases and kill Duke and Fenix ***
KERRIGAN:
It is done, Cerebrate. They've all been destroyed. Let
us return to Tarsonis to rest. For the first time since my
transfiguration I am wearied of the slaughter.
Comment: By the time of her 'transfiguration' she means her birth into the Swarm - and that's been a long time.
It probably is just part of the script and a reason to return to Tarsonis for the next mission, but one remote possibility is that the death's of two people Kerrigan has known, and the outburst from her former allies, has made her feel guilty or some sort of emotion. Maybe there is some semblence of humanity left in her?
Mission End
XZ-06. "FURY OF THE SWARM"
Kerrigan's Fortress, on the planet Tarsonis
Two days later
Mission Briefing
Objectives :
- Destroy the renegade zerg
Duran :
My Queen, our scouts have just
discovered a massive wave of Zerg
in high orbit. Hundreds of Zerg
have landed upon Tarsonis and are
even now approaching our location!
A number of our outposts are
already under attack by the
renegade Swarm!
Kerrigan :
So, the UED is testing out their
control of their pet Overmind. I had
hoped to lay low after we razed
Korhal, but it seems the UED is
intent on forcing my hand.
Duran :
Shall I rally your forces, my Queen?
Kerrigan :
Yes. We've got to defend our
remaining outposts and make sure
that the renegades can't gain a
foothold in our immediate vicinity.
Once we've secured our perimeter,
we'll begin to take the fight to their
hive clusters.
Mission Start
*** Beginning of the mission (awhile after the outposts are destroyed) ***
DURAN
My Queen, we have located a small Terran facility towards
the rear of the Renegade's landing zone. There appears to
be a number of UED scientists working within the compound,
but we are unable to determine the purpose of their
presence...
KERRIGAN
I know what they're up to. I suspected that the UED's
control of the Overmind was tenuous. Tarsonis is too
remote for them to maintain direct control over the Swarms,
so they've sent these 'scientists' to coordinate their attack.
DURAN
Cerebrate, focus your attack against the Terran facility.
All of the UED scientists must be killed. Only then will we
be able to finish off these Renegade Zerg.
NEW MISSION OBJECTIVES
- Kill all the UED Scientists
Mission End
Comment: There's not much to say about this mission - it's almost like it's filler, or simply to set up the next act of the campaign.
XZ-07. "DRAWING OF THE WEB"
Holding orbit over the planet Shakuras
Comment: Obviously, the title is referring to a spider creating a web.
Mission Briefing
Objectives :
- Bring Duran to each zerg beacon
- Duran must survive
Kerrigan :
Cerebrate, it's time we returned to
Shakuras. I have some unfinished
business with the Dark Templar
Matriarch, Raszagal. I'll need to steal
her from her tribe before we can
finally assault the Overmind on Char.
However, her defenders will not
simply allow us to take her away.
Duran :
The pylon clusters are generating
some sort of electromagnetic field
that is preventing our flyers from
maneuvering. We won't have any air
support at all.
Comment: I used to wonder: this isn't the Xel'Naga Temple? I thought the whole point of the temple's power was that it would prevent any zerg from touching Shakuras ever again?
Perhaps the temple needs to be charged for its attack, or Raszagal could have been exaggerating (partially as herself or completely through Kerrigan's manipulation).
Kerrigan :
Then we'll need some new
strategy...
Duran :
Perhaps it would be best if we
staged some kind of diversion, my
Queen, and claimed the Matriarch
during the confusion.
Kerrigan :
What did you have in mind, Duran?
Duran :
The Protoss outpost of Talematros
is built upon a large mesa and is
essentially impregnable to ground
attacks. However, Talematros is
fueled and supported by a number
of adjacent pylon clusters. I believe
that if we can cause a surge within
those pylon clusters, we can cause
Talematros' power grids to overload.
The resulting explosion will be the
perfect cover for retrieving the
Matriarch.
Kerrigan :
Clean, simple, devious. I like it. Make
it happen Duran. Cerebrate, you'll
provide cover for Duran as he
infiltrates the pylon clusters. Let
nothing stand in our way!
Mission Start
*** Bring Duran to the first beacon ***
DURAN
Pylon cluster set to overload.
*** Bring Duran to the second beacon ***
DURAN
Charges set.
*** Bring Duran to the third beacon ***
DURAN
Pylon cluster set to overload.
*** Bring Duran to the fourth beacon ***
DURAN
Charges set.
*** Bring Duran to the fifth beacon ***
DURAN
This cluster is ready to overload.
*** Activated all five beacons ***
DURAN
My Queen, the last charge is set. Talematros will explode
on your command.
KERRIGAN
Very well. Cerebrate, send my minions to the planet
and have them retrieve the Matriarch. Duran, ignite the
charges!
DURAN
Ignition commencing.
Mission End
Comment: It's a neat level on its own, as it forces players to adapt without the transport ability for Overlords or to make any zerg air units. It's also a good excuse to fight Protoss forces in the campaign, something that hasn't particularly happened so far.
XZ-08. "TO SLAY THE BEAST"
Infested platform over the planet Char
Kerrigan's base of operation
Comment: This title is a neat contrast to the UED's finale level, "To Chain the Beast". While level titles can be simple and effective ("Escape from Aiur"), I like the slightly more imaginative ones. I'm not sure what the exact term for this sort of English grammar, but this level, for example, describes the attempt to perform the act.
Mission Briefing
Objectives :
- Destroy the Overmind with
Dark Templar
- Must be able to have
Dark Templar
Kerrigan :
The time is finally upon us, my
minions, to destroy the wretched
Overmind and the last of its
Renegade Cerebrates. We can
count on the UED providing us with
heavy resistance, but not even they
can stand in our way. Now that
the Matriarch, Raszagal is in my
custody, I possess the means to
attack the Overmind with impunity.
Duran :
But my Queen, I thought only the
Dark Templar's energies could harm
the Overmind and its Cerebrates.
Even with the numerous Broods at
your command, any attack we launch
against the Renegades will be in
vain.
Kerrigan :
Not so, Duran. As a matter of fact,
I'm expecting my secret weapon to
be arriving very soon.
Duran :
As you say, my Queen. But I still
don't understand wh-
We are receiving a transmission
from an unidentified Protoss
Carrier...
Kerrigan :
That's what I love about the
Protoss... They're so punctual.
Comment: Tee-heh!
On a small note, Kerrigan is still sarcastic, no matter how much she has changed, whether at her current plight or through the manipulation of her enemies.
Zeratul :
Kerrigan, this is Zeratul. I demand
to know why you've taken our
Matriarch.
Kerrigan :
Actually, Zeratul, she's not the one
I'm truly interested in. I stole her
to get to you. You see, I need you
and your brethren to kill the
Overmind for me. The only way I
had of assuring your cooperation
was to take away that which you
value most. However, I give you my
word that once you've killed the
Overmind, I'll allow her to return to
you.
Zeratul :
As if your word held any value...
Raszagal :
Zeratul, my faithful servant. You
must aid Kerrigan in this endeavor.
The Overmind is our common
enemy. It must be destroyed to
insure that our people will survive!
Zeratul :
You ask me to aid this vile
creature?
Raszagal :
I do not ask this for myself. Nor do
I ask it on Kerrigan's behalf. I ask
you to do this for our people,
Zeratul. Obey me as you always
have... Trust in my judgement.
Zeratul :
Very well, Matriarch. The
Overmind will die this day.
Comment: Kerrigan psychically pulls the strings of the Matriarch once more, though I imagine player's are suspecting what's going on at this point - Raszagal is bending over backwards to work towards Kerrigan's goal, just like in the Protoss campaign. As I believe I've noted before, Zeratul himself is one of the most powerful Protoss alive, yet he is oblivious to this. He's certainly not playing along - either Kerrigan really is that dominant or he has significant faith in Raszagal.
Mission Start
*** Kill the Overmind ***
ZERATUL
It's done, Kerrigan. The Overmind is dead as you wished.
Now I demand that you release the Matriarch at once!
KERRIGAN
Of course. Raszagal, do you wish to return to your tribe?
RASZAGAL
No, my Queen. I wish only to serve you and remain at your side.
ZERATUL
What treachery is this, Kerrigan? This pathetic creature
cannot possibly be Raszagal!
KERRIGAN
Ha ha ha. I promised that I'd allow her to return to you, Zeratul.
But it looks to me like she doesn't want to go.
ZERATUL
You have corrupted her! Somehow you have poisoned her
thoughts. Restore her to her rightful self, or you will pay dearly
for this offense, Kerrigan!
Comment: Zeratul finally catches on...
KERRIGAN
All right, Zeratul, you've got me. I made your Matriarch my
slave long before I joined you on Shakuras. She made the
mistake of underestimating my power just like everyone else
did. And now she's paid the price.
With her as my puppet I was able to eradicate the Renegades
on Shakuras, and use you to kill the Overmind. And as you can
see, your leader belongs to me now. Not bad, huh?
Comment: Kerrigan's game plan is revealed. It appears that Kerrigan enslaved Raszagal before the UED got involved. She intentionally decided to do so as she knew it would one day be useful.
Everyone truly has under-estimated her power, but being able to enslave one of the oldest and most powerful Protoss alive is something else. If you can't remotely begin to imagine it, how can people not under-estimate her?
Once again, she has fantastically manipulated people to do the work for her. The way she plays with Raszagal's behaviour really shows the extent of her power, as well as her willingness to mock Zeratul.
Power and responsibility and all that. Kerrigan was never meant to have all of that power - it's like a child exhibiting god-like powers.
ZERATUL
We shall see, Kerrigan. We shall see...
Comment: Zeratul lends that line from Aldaris, once more suggesting that nothing is certain and things are yet to be decided. Plus that, despite their differences, he did learn something from him.
Mission End
Comment: I think it's interesting that the campaign could have ended there - the other characters have been beaten, Kerrigan is free of the new Overmind and the UED now only have their conventional forces to stand against her. It would have been easy, if unsatisfying, to wrap things up there.
XZ-09. "THE RECKONING"
Comment: 'Reckoning' is one of those words I see while growing up yet was never certain what it really meant. I thought it was always associated with Christianity and it partially is - the 'Day of reckoning' is a term used to describe the Last Judgment. Meanwhile, the word on its own refers to 'a settling of account' which does match the challenge that the player faces in the level.
Somewhere on the planet Char
Six hours later
Mission Briefing
Objectives :
- Destroy the Protoss base within 30
minutes
- Recover the Matriarch and Zeratul
Duran :
My Queen, with the Overmind and
its cerebrates destroyed, all of the
Zerg in this sector have reverted
to your direct control. The
remnants of the UED fleet have
fled the planet, but I have no idea
how many functional ships they still
possess.
We have finished relocating your
primary hive clusters to this orbital
platform. However, we do have a
problem. Somehow, Zeratul and his
brethren were able to bypass our
defenses and steal their Matriarch
away from us.
Kerrigan :
Damn Zeratul! He is a formidable
adversary. Where have they run to,
Duran?
Duran :
Our scouts report that they have
regrouped with a number of Protoss
survivors on the surface of Char.
The Matriarch is being held within a
stasis cell, leading me to suspect
that the Protoss will attempt to
take her home to Shakuras.
Kerrigan :
Heh. They still believe that she can
be saved from my influence...
Zeratul will be very dissapointed to
learn that Raszagal is beyond
redemption. How much time before
their fleet is ready to debark for
Shakuras?
Comment: Kerrigan is very much aware of her power to dominate a mind - she knows that Raszagal is completely bound to her will.
Duran :
They will be capable of dimensional
recall within thirty minutes, my
Queen.
Kerrigan :
That may be all the time we need.
Cerebrate, mobilize all of my broods
and send them to the surface of
Char. I want you to bring both the
Matriarch and Zeratul to me alive.
Terminate the remaining Protoss
with extreme prejudice.
Comment: As we see in the finale level, sending all of her broods turns out to be hasty and leaves her exposed. What was she saying about you being your own worst enemy?
Mission Start
*** Destroy the Protoss base within 30 minutes ***
ZERATUL
Damn you, Kerrigan, for what I must do!
RASZAGAL
Thank you, Zeratul... You have freed me from
her vile control at last. You have always served
me with honor... Thus I must ask you... to watch
over my tribe... Into your hands I give the future.
Comment: It's another speech, like when Stukov died (though shorter), where the character is fatally wounded but manages to squeeze out their final words before dying. It's daft - but necessary for the scene.
KERRIGAN
I can hardly believe this! You've killed your own Matriarch!
ZERATUL
Better that I killed her, than let her live as your slave, Kerrigan.
KERRIGAN
Well, I have misjudged you, warrior. You are worthy,
indeed. You are free to go.
ZERATUL
What?
KERRIGAN
I said, you are free to go. I've already taken
your honor. I'll let you live, because I know that
from now on; your every waking moment will be
torture. You'll never be able to forgive yourself for
what I've forced you to do. And that, Zeratul, is a
better revenge than I could have ever dreamed of.
Comment: "Am I not merciful?!"
Like with Raynor and Mengsk in the past, she's allowed Zeratul to live, yet it's not like she's a compassionate person any more - she's ruthlessly murdered thousands, if not millions, as well as Aldaris, Fenix and Duke, as well as ultimately causing Stukov and Raszagal's own demise. Now she wants Mengsk and Zeratul to live in disgrace and shame for the rest of their lives. It's far less than actual mercy if anything - it's more that she wants the satisfaction of watching them feel crushed and in despair. There's a clear difference there and it certainly shows that, if anything, Kerrigan's empathy has become warped. She is one evil bitch.
ZERATUL
You will regret this decision, Kerrigan. We shall
meet again.
Comment: We know that this occurs close to the beginning of StarCraft 2 as revealed at BlizzCon 2008. The cinematic shows Zeratul confronting Kerrigan in some underground chamber, near a Xel'Nagan temple of some sort, but we do not see the outcome.
Based on his talk with Raynor in the StarCraft 2 Terran campaign, he survived but was badly wounded.
BONUS LEVEL ACTIVATED!
Comment: Players get this if they beat The Reckoning in under 25 minutes.
Mission End

X-BONUS. "DARK ORIGIN
(This wasn't included in the original text file that I got from GameFAQs so I'm relying on a transcript - thanks Trilby and Linaze)
(Briefing)
ZERATUL
My friends, we have suffered a great defeat. Our Matriarch is dead, our fleet has been scattered across the Astral Winds, and Kerrigan has gained complete control over the Zerg Swarms. Yet, as always, we must struggle onward. Our immediate priority is to find Artanis and his warriors. Once we have made contact with him, we can return to Shakuras and plan our next moves
HIGH TEMPLAR
Prelate Zeratul, we are currently tracking Protoss power signatures emanating from an uncharted moon nearby. Our records do not indicate that there has never been a Protoss settlement in this quadrant.
ZERATUL
Strange. It could be Artanis or other survivors of our fleet down there. At any rate, it is our duty to investigate the source of the enemy signatures. Set your courses for the dark moon. If Artanis is there, we shall find him.
End of Briefing
Mission Start:
*An Arbiter flies around the moon*
HIGH TEMPLAR
Zeratul, our sensors have detected a small Terran compound near the source of the energy signatures
ZERATUL
Understood. I'll look into this matter myself.
*Arbiter teleports Zeratul, two Dragoons, and four Dark Archons*
*Zeratul approaches the first cell*
ZERATUL
There is a Protoss in this cell!
ADJUTANT
Danger! Test subject twenty-three suffering from psychic feedback. Pylon crystals at critical stage. Cell meltdown imminent.
*Cell blows up, the Protoss inside it dies.*
ZERATUL
Damn! The Terrans are having more trouble utilizing pylons than I thought. And I still have no clue as to why they imprisoned that Protoss within the cell.
*Zeratul approaches the second cell*
ZERATUL
There is a Protoss in this cell as well. Maybe this computer terminal can give me the answers I seek.
ADJUTANT
Test subject twenty-five in cryo-hibernation. Neuro scan compiling data. DNA code computed and archived. Psionic emanations minimal.
ZERATUL
The audacity of these Terrans confounds me! If they seek to know more about Protoss warriors, I will give them a first-hand lesson!
*Zeratul approaches the third cell*
ZERATUL
What's this? There is a Zergling in this tank! What is going on here?
ADJUTANT
Test subject twenty-seven in cryo-hibernation. Neuro scan completed and archived. DNA code computed and archived. Gene splicing between test subjects twenty-five and twenty-seven completed. Experiment 2273 progressing.
ZERATUL
By the gods...this can't be happening!
*Zeratul approached the final cell*
ZERATUL
I've-I've never seen a creature like this before!
ADJUTANT
Test subject twenty nine, classified. Protoss-Zerg Hybrid, in perfect cryo-hibernation. Psionic emanations minimal.
ZERATUL
No!
(Duran begins to talk to Zeratul)
DURAN
Magnificent isn't it?
ZERATUL
What? Who are you?
DURAN
I've had many names throughout the millennia, young prodigal. You would know me best as Samir Duran.
ZERATUL
Kerrigan's consort! Is this part of her twisted schemes?
DURAN
No. Young Kerrigan could not have engineered this grand experiment. Although her rebirth into the Zerg Swarm has sped up my progress, I can assure you that this endeavor is quite beyond her narrow understanding.
ZERATUL
If you are not her pawn, then what are you?
DURAN
I am a servant of a far greater power. A power that has slept for countless ages. And is reflected in the creature within that cell.
ZERATUL
Have you any conception of what you've created here? Do you have any idea what this... this Hybrid is capable of?
DURAN
Of course I do. This creature is the completion of a cycle. Its role in the cosmic order was preordained when the stars were young. Behold the culmination of your history.
ZERATUL
All I behold is an abomination.
DURAN
Your violence, young prodigal, is typical. As is your inability to comprehend the greater scheme of things. You can destroy all of the specimens here. It will do you no good. For I have seeded the Hybrid on many, many worlds. You will never find them all before they awaken... And when they do... your universe will be changed... forever.
Comment: This single level is responsible for possibly the most speculation and discussion I've ever seen on fan forums - at least for StarCraft anyway.
After years of people posting their thoughts, let me summarise what we can derive from the mission:
- All of this is absolutely canon and was designed as foreshadowing for StarCraft 2.
- The experiments on the moon are an attempt to combine the Protoss and zerg together into one hybrid species, as well as mixing the other species.
- Duran is not solely a zerg servant of Kerrigan, but an agent of a greater power (and so has infiltrated Kerrigan and her own plans). It is not specified that he is or works for the Xel'Naga, which means it could be another, unknown inter-galactic race. However, based on information for StarCraft 2, it is very possible it is the Xel'Naga as the campaign seems to revolve around their return.
- The hybrids are seeded across many other worlds and, based on the mercenaries guarding the one in this level, Duran is financed and connected, so likely has them well protected.
- Zeratul apparently then goes into exile, dedicating his time to finding out more about what is going to happen. From the trailer cinematics released, we're lead to believe that it's the return of the Xel'naga. After being wounded, he passes on the quest to Raynor.
You can read more at the StarCraft wikia:
http://starcraft.wikia.com/wiki/Dark_Origin
http://starcraft.wikia.com/wiki/Hybrid
Were the Xel'Naga originally the combination of Protoss and zerg? Upon their return, do the Xel'naga mean to destroy the other races? Did they predict their own assimilation into the zerg Swarm?
These questions will eventually be answered in StarCraft 2.

XZ-10. "OMEGA"
Infested platform over the planet Char
Kerrigan's base of operations
Mission Briefing
Objectives :
- Destroy all enemy bases
Kerrigan :
Cerebrate, our scouts have just
identified three separate fleets
approaching this platform. With
Duran having disapeared, and the
bulk of my broods still on the
surface of Char, you'll need to hold
off the invaders by yourself.
Comment: Duran having disappeared due to the events in Dark Origin, but based on his actions it is likely due to his further plans and schemes. Did he 'serve' Kerrigan to ensure she remains leader of the zerg? That would make sense if he later plans to manipulate her or somehow take control.
Mengsk :
You sound worried, Kerrigan. Have I
caught you at a bad time?
Kerrigan :
Not at all, Arcturus. How'd you
manage to scrape up your new
fleet? Been raiding the salvage
dump again?
Mengsk :
I called in a few favors. Made a few
concessions. You'd be surprised to
see how many special interest
groups in this sector want to see
you dead.
Kerrigan :
I'm sorry to have to dissapoint your
new friends, Arcturus. But you
really shouldn't have attempted this
stunt. It'll take more than your
three little fleets to bring me down.
Mengsk :
Three fleets?
Kerrigan :
Don't play dumb, Arcturus. I've
already spotted the other two
fleets.
Comment: Ho ho!
Artanis :
Kerrigan, this is Artanis. My
brethren and I have come to avenge
the deaths of Fenix, the Matriarch,
and all of the other Protoss who
fell before the Swarm! It is long
past time you paid for your crimes
against our people.
Kerrigan :
When it rains, it pours...
Mengsk :
Hah ha ha... The Protoss, too! Care
to take a guess as to who the third
fleet is?
Kerrigan :
No need to guess. It's DuGalle and
the remainder of the UED fleet.
DuGalle :
That is correct, Kerrigan. This is
Admiral DuGalle. I am giving you one
last chance to surrender your
forces, and submit to the sovereign
authority of the United Earth
Directorate.
Kerrigan :
Gee, that's a tough one, Admiral.
You'll have let me think for a
minute... You know, Admiral, I think
I'll just massacre your remaining
troops now and watch you die in
agony. How would that be?
DuGalle :
You vastly underestimate me, my
dear.
Kerrigan :
I don't think so, Admiral. You see, at
this point... I'm pretty much the
Queen Bitch of the Universe. And
not all of your little soldiers or
space ships will stand in my way
again.
DuGalle :
So be it.
Comment: It's almost like the writers are blatant in their way of setting up the finale level - "You want a challenge? Here you go Mr Player, fight all these guys off and you WIN!".
Seriously, it is at least a suitable finale and a heck of a challenge. It also concludes the status of the Dominion, Protoss and UED, rendering them beaten.
Mission Start
*** Destroy Dominion forces (red) ***
MENGSK
Congratulations, Kerrigan. You've beaten me again. Just
remember that I'll be out there... Waiting for you to slip up. Because
sooner or later you'll make a mistake. And when you do...
*** Destroy Protoss forces (blue) ***
ARTANIS
Savor this victory, Kerrigan! For the Protoss will never forget your
treachery. We shall be watching you.
*** Destroy UED forces (white) ***
DUGALLE
Kerrigan, I am prepared to offer terms of surrender. It is my wish
that you allow my men to live-
KERRIGAN
You're not in a position to offer me anything, Admiral. And I don't
take prisoners. I'll tell you what... Turn your remaining ships around
and start heading back towards the Earth. I'll let you have a head
start, before I send the Swarms after you. It'll be interesting sport to
see how far you get before you die.
Comment: Unlike the other moments when she offers mercy, she has none for DuGalle and the UED. Is it because she hates them for being a significant threat to her plans? Or is she erratic?
Mission End
Comment: Despite being caught off guard, Kerrigan was still able to win and defeat the triumvirate of her enemies.
The campaign ends with a cinematic, "The Ascension".
There are two speeches in it, the first by Kerrigan amid scenes of destruction.
Kerrigan:
Once again I stand atop the broken bodies of my enemies...
Victorious but not unscarred.
The Earth-borne Directorate has been destroyed.
And the Overmind lies dead and trampled beneath the ashes of Char.
As for my unlikely allies, I think that I shall allow them a reprieve.
For in time I will seek to test their resolve, and their strengths.
They will all be mine in the end, for I am the Queen of Blades.
None shall ever dispute my rule again.
Comment: What is there to say? Kerrigan has won. For now. She's happy to let her former allies survive for the time being, purely so she can fight them again in the future - possibly so that they have a chance to grow stronger, as eventually she will assimilate them into her Swarm.
Then, shortly before DuGalle commits suicide he sends a letter to his wife:
DuGalle:
Dearest Helena,
By now the news of our defeat has reached the Earth. The
creatures we were sent here to tame are untameable---And
the colonies we were sent to reclaim have proven to be
stronger than we anticipated.
Whatever you may hear about what has happened out here,
know this: Alexei did not die a hero. I killed him---my
pride killed him. And now my pride has consumed me as well.
You will never see me again, Helena.
Tell our children that I love them, and that their father
died in defense of their future.
Au revior
Comment: Absolutely tragic, even if the UED possibly represent the worst of mankind. DuGalle knows he is defeated and decides to end his life by his own hands.
While I'd like to think DuGalle's pride is the UED's general disregard for the fate of the colonists (as we see one of the marines from the intro movie), it more seems to be more for DuGalle being blinded into believing Stukov was a traitor. Maybe it's both, where his best friend's death made him realise what he's done.
EPILOGUE
Shortly after DuGalle's defeat, the remainder
of the UED Fleet was overtaken by Kerrigan's
forces and eradicated. No UED vessel ever
made it back to Earth to report what had
transpired.
With his rag-tag fleet beaten and crippled,
Arcturus Mengsk fled back to Korhal to lick
his wounds and plan the reconstruction of his
Terran Dominion...
Artanis and the Protoss survivors returned
to Shakuras to begin rebuilding their once
glorious civilization...
Zeratul and James Raynor went their
separate ways and have not been heard from
since their departure.
And alone, floating on a dark platform above
the burnt-out planet of Char, Sarah Kerrigan,
the Queen of Blades, sat and lorded over the
ravenous Swarms. Unable to shake the feeling
that a great threat loomed just over the
horizon, Kerrigan could only stare off into the
vastness of space where she beheld a great
void. Or perhaps a reflection of a hollow
victory and of the trials yet to come...

Comment: It is done. The campaign is concluded, as the Dominion and Protoss forces are defeated while the UED expeditionary force is destroyed.
This is no glorious, hard-won victory, it's just the establishment of Kerrigan's dominance of the sector. She's manipulated practically everyone and destroyed anyone who who stood in her way. She used her power to dominate one of the most powerful Protoss alive and commands every zerg in the sector. Despite this, I think Kerrigan is conflicted - there are times when she is acting on impulse and instinct, then acting with emotion elsewhere.
Despite everything she has done, she feels empty, either a leftover portion of her humanity has regret for what she's done, or simply that her work was ultimately too easy, given her power and abilities.
The cinematic from StarCraft 2 of Zeratul meeting Raynor suggests that Kerrigan's fate is tied into the return of the Xel'Naga. As a human-zerg hybrid, I'm unsure how this will work - is it her ability to control the zerg to fight back the Xel'Naga? Duran did say that her assimilation sped up the progress of his work - how so?
Will everyone seek her aid, despite her wanton treachery? Will she have a chance at redemption? This would go back on my thought that it would be her who would seek the help of the other factions, but they would turn away due to her past sins.
We're left with more questions, such is life. If I have to make one prediction for StarCraft 2, however, it's that Kerrigan won't survive StarCraft 2 come the end of the Protoss campaign.
We shall see.
And we're done. I had no idea it would take this long to do the commentary, each campaign has taken many, many hours. Thank you for very much for reading - feel free to post any thoughts or feedback on the Samods forum.
Roll on StarCraft 2.

Epilogue
Mengsk :
And what are you offering me in
return?
Kerrigan :
Hah. Ever the politician. All right,
'Emperor', if you help me destroy
the Disrupter, I'll help you retake
Korhal from the UED.
Mengsk :
Hmm... a tempting offer. What
assurances do I have of you fulfilling
your end of the bargain?
Comment: Seems like a good deal. The gain for each person is significant to them and not too difficult for the other to perform.
Kerrigan :
The only thing I can assure you of,
Arcturus, is that without my help,
you'll be the Emperor of your own
little eight by eight cell for the
rest of your life.
Comment: In other words, 'take it or leave it.'
Mengsk :
I see that you're still a persuasive
speaker. All right, Kerrigan. I'll lend
you some Emitters, but this had
better be worth it.
Comment: Really, he has no compassion for Kerrigan - he recognises her, even mentions she still has signs of her human character, but seems to have no remorse for what he did to her at all.
Mission Start
*** Beginning of the mission ***
RAYNOR
All right boys and girls, listen up! Our objective is
to locate and disable the Psi Disrupter's primary
power generator. Once we've done that, we'll
turn the mission over to Mengsk and Kerrigan.
Let's move out!
Comment: I'm unsure whether this section of the level was originally going to to be controlled by the player or not and maybe Blizzard canned that idea and instead had it as an in-game scene.
GHOST
I'm gone...
MARINE
Go! Go! Go!
Comment: It's always amusing (for the first time at least) to say the unit responses used in campaigns - but, really, I hope this sort of thing stays in the past.
RAYNOR
Kerrigan, the generator's off-line. You can send down the Psi
Emitters at any time.
KERRIGAN
Good work, Jim.
Comment: Here's a quick thought - it's interesting to see how we've almost came full circle with the characters - Raynor, Kerrigan and Mengsk are working together once again. How things have changed ...
MENGSK
The Psi Emitter will be carried by one of my SCV's. With the
Disrupter's power cut, the Emitter should be able to get the
attention of any renegade Zerg near it. The SCV will then be
able to lure the Zerg back to your base. Once the Zerg arrive
there, you'll be able to assert direct control over them.
*** Acquire at least 1 Zerg Drone using the Psi Emmitter ***
KERRIGAN
Perfect! With these Zerg I can construct a new hive cluster!
Once my forces have grown strong enough, I can assault the
Psi Disrupter directly!
*** Acquire Hunter Killer / Devouring One / Torrasque ***
KERRIGAN
Excellent work! Although these Zerg are now under my control, I
sense that there are more Zerg out there. We must lure as many
of them here as possible!
*** Have acquired all remaining scattered renegade Zerg ***
SCV
Um, with all due respect to Miss Kerrigan sir. These critters make
me nervous as hell. I sure would appreciate some immediate evac.
Comment: Can't say I blame him!
Mission End
XZ-03. "THE KEL-MORIAN COMBINE"
Command ship Hyperion, orbiting the planet
Moria
Comment: Anyone who has read the game's backstory or seen the faction names in multiplayer will know that there are many groups in the sector for each race. Tribes for the Protoss, Broods for the zerg, while Terrans have squadrons and some general factions which originated from the different worlds that the prison ships landed on. We never encountered any in the original StarCraft campaign so it's good that we finally do.
The name 'Morian' and the faction's status as a mining guild is likely a homage to the mine Moria in The Lord of the Rings. Incidentally, Blizzard also named a dwarven princess 'Moira' in World of WarCraft.
Mission Briefing
Objectives :
- Obtain 10,000 minerals
- Fenix must survive
Comment: Though it's obvious in retrospect of StarCraft, but too many missions became 'build and destroy' types where the player has to simply build up their forces and then exterminate the enemy bases, so it's good for things to get mixed up a little.
Fenix :
Now that the Psi Disrupter has
been destroyed and Kerrigan has
regained control of her minions, I
fear that she will forget our pact
and turn on us.
Raynor :
I know what you mean, Fenix. I'd love
to believe that she's on the level,
but there's a part of me that just
knows better. However, I do believe
that she's serious about taking out
the UED. The only real question left
is what happens to us when she
wins.
Mengsk :
If you ask me, she's completely
untrustworthy. But, so long as she'll
help me retake Korhal, I'll work with
her.
Raynor :
Shut up, Arcturus. If I wanted your
damn opinion, I would've beaten it
out of ya'. And in case you forgot,
you're the reason she became what
she is in the first place!
Comment: Awesome dialog. Things are left ambiguous regarding Kerrigan's long-term plans and we're left guessing.
Kerrigan :
You boys should really learn to play
nice with each other.
Fenix :
Kerrigan, are your forces ready to
assault Korhal as we planned?
Kerrigan :
Nearly. I still need a substantial
cache of resources in order to build
up my primary hive clusters. I'm
wondering if you gentlemen wouldn't
mind going on a fuel raid for me?
Raynor :
It sounds like you've already got a
plan. What are ya' thinkin'?
Kerrigan :
I'm thinking that we should pay the
Kel-Morian Combine a little visit.
Moria is one of the largest resource
nodes in the sector. If you can
bypass their defenses, and steal
enough resources from them, we'll
be able to afford a full-scale assault
on Korhal.
Raynor :
It's risky, but I think we can handle
it. Fenix, are you into this?
Fenix :
If it betters our chances, I will lead
the assault myself.
Comment: Fenix is still awesome. He's almost like a Protoss version of 80s Arnold Schwarzenegger. "Git to da wurp gate!"
Raynor :
Great. Let's get moving.
Duran :
Do you think they suspect anything,
my Queen?
Kerrigan :
Of course. They aren't stupid,
Duran. They're siding with the evil
they know over the evil they don't...
They simply don't yet realize what
it will cost them.
Comment: Or maybe Kerrigan's plans are not so ambiguous. The player likely cares more for Fenix and Raynor (but not Mengsk) so this is going to leave them uneasy for sure. Oh, the inevitable tragedy...
"They're siding with the evil they know over the evil they don't..." - really? Kerrigan already asked Raynor if he knew what the UED were like and he did say he wasn't certain. I guess it's because it's uncertain what the UED's reign of the sector would be like exactly.
Duran at least knows what her plans are, but I think he's playing dumb, likely to lower any suspicion.
Mission Start
*** Beginning of the mission ***
KERRIGAN
Cerebrate, I want you to infest as many Terran command
centers as possible. Once they're infested, we'll be able
to use them in our coming assault on Korhal.
OPTIONAL MISSION OBJECTIVE
- Infest command centers for next mission
Comment: Like the Terran campaign's choice to disable nuclear missiles or battlecruisers, it's neat to see another choice for the player. The command centres they infest are carried over to the next map. This is another thing I hope we see more of in StarCraft 2 and other RTS games.
*** Destroying enemy base near start location ***
FENIX
It is difficult to believe that I am working along
side my greatest enemy in order to save this sector.
Fortune has been whimsical of late.
RAYNOR
You sound like a tired old man, Fenix!
FENIX
Don't let the fact that I am three hundred and sixty eight
years older than you dull your impression of me, young
Raynor. I can still... how do you Terrans say it...
"Throw down with the best of them!"
RAYNOR
I stand corrected.
Comment: Brilliant. Really, it cements our impression of the duo's relationship. They're both fighters who respect one another. It's a shame we don't see too much of it, but when we do it then it's great.
*** Build a Hatchery ***
KERRIGAN
Remember, Cerebrate, we'll need at least ten thousand
units of crystals to maintain the hive clusters. Don't come
back with anything less!
*** Infest / Destroy first Command Center ***
FENIX
It is strange that this Kel-Morian Combine continues to
operate while the UED grips the Dominion with an iron
fist. I'll never underestimate the motivational effects of
Terran greed again!
Comment: Whereas the Protoss (aside the split between the Khalai Protoss and the Dark Templar) are relatively united and fight for a common goal, and the zerg are bound to their masters will, it's clear to Fenix that humans are fragmented. I'm sure there's a lot that could be said about isolationism here but I'll leave it at that.
*** Infest / Destroy another Command Center ***
FENIX
I prefer large scale battles over these covert missions.
My heart longs for the epic struggles of my youth, to
go into battle alongside my Protoss brethren again. Ah,
but time will tell all things.
Comment: It's like the writers are building up or reminding us of Fenix's character once more.
*** Accumulate 10,000 minerals, or infest / destroy all Command Centers ***
FENIX
Kerrigan, we have reached our resource quota, and will
be returning to Tarsonis.
Mission End
XZ-04. "THE LIBERATION OF KORHAL"
High orbit over the UED capitol world, Korhal
Comment: I guess that because Mengsk had it as his capitol world then the UED has based themselves out of Korhal as well. Most of the other Terran worlds are either in ruin or are not (presumably) as central as Korhal.
Mission Briefing
Objectives :
- Destroy all enemy bases
Kerrigan :
You have all performed superbly.
Especially you, Fenix. My hive
clusters are brimming with energy
and my broods are stronger than
ever.
Mengsk :
Then let's waste no time! Every
moment we sit here means that
the UED's defenses will be that
much stronger! And I want nothing
to stand between us and the
retaking of my planet!
Kerrigan :
You're right, Arcturus. The time to
strike the UED is now. But
remember that we're up against
one of the most heavily defended
planets in the sector. Laying siege
to Korhal won't be easy. Not only
does the UED control a substantial
standing army, but may have Zerg
reinforcements as well.
Raynor, you and Fenix will strike at
the more outlying fortification, while
my forces are busy assaulting the
main UED base at Augustgrad.
Mengsk :
We've discussed this plan a hundred
times! Commence the damn attack!
Comment: Mengsk is just absolutely desperate to get back into power, he really is a megalomaniac. He's not quite delusional about being Emperor (in misrepresenting reality to what he wants it to be) but he wants to return to power more than anything.
Kerrigan :
Hah... Very well, Arcturus. Before
the next sunrise, Korhal will be
yours once again.
Mission Start
*** Attacked by UED Ultralisk ***
KERRIGAN
As I suspected... The UED has sent its pet Zerg to reinforce
their troops. But strangely enough, there aren't very many
Zerg attacking. Maybe the UED is having more difficulty
controlling the Overmind than I thought?
*** Destroy all enemy bases ***
KERRIGAN
Excellent work, my Cerebrate! The UED's defenses are broken. Arcturus, you
may take possesion of this world with my blessings.
MENGSK
Don't be snide, Kerrigan. This was part of the deal, remember? I've earned
this... I am Emperor of the Dominion again. I'll be sending General Duke to
establish my base of operations in Augustgrad.
Comment: I'm not exactly sure why Blizzard seem to be making a point of his obsession with being Emperor, probably just to show how much he has changed from his humble beginnings and I suppose it is exactly how he'd act.
There's also a quick reminder that Duke is around - and so prominent that he's Mengsk's main military figure.
KERRIGAN
I hope you make the most of your reign...
Mission End
XZ-05. "TRUE COLORS"
Outskirts of Augustgrad
Early morning
Comment: If you didn't know, the level title is a phrase that refers to someone revealing their actual intentions and character. It probably comes from naval use, where ships would fly different national colours (based on a flag) and pirates would use fake colours to get closer to their prey. At least, someone on AnswerBag says so and I reckon it's very likely true.
And unlike most other mission title screens, we're even told that it's early morning, to show the element of surprise that is taking place.
Mission Briefing
Objectives :
- Destroy the enemy bases
- Kill Duke
- Kill Fenix
Comment: As soon as a player sees the objectives, they know what they have to do. Duke may be grossly disliked already, but having to personally kill Fenix? Ouch. I'm reminded of the 'scene' in WarCraft 2 where you witness Lothar die (which was obviously very basic but still a memorable scene), but this time the player will be personally carrying it out.
Kerrigan :
Cerebrate, Duran, the time has
come to separate the chaff from
the wheat. Now that the UED's
power base is broken on this world,
only their forces on Char pose any
significant threat to me. It's time
to move to the second phase of my
plan.
Comment: Just to continue with my explaination of sayings, to 'separate the chaff from the wheat' means to separate the worthless from the useful, in short - chaff being the 'inedible, dry, scaly protective casings of the seeds of cereal grain'. Surprisingly to myself, its roots are not in medieval farming but rather the Bible.
Duran :
And what of your allies here on
Korhal, my Queen? What would you
have done with them?
Kerrigan :
They are of no further use to me.
Though they have proven
themselves useful, it might be
dangerous to allow them to live.
Without the services of General
Duke, Mengsk will be easy to deal
with. But Raynor and Fenix are
uncannily resourceful. They must all
be eradicated. Cerebrate, I want
both General Duke's and Fenix's
bases destroyed. Leave no one
alive.
Comment: Would it really be that dangerous? They're just single individuals after all, however capable. Maybe Kerrigan is insecure, or maybe it's yet again more good drama?
Duran :
My Queen, if I may suggest a
strategy? Both the Protoss and
Terran forces are resting after our
previous victory. If we attack
immediately, while most of them are
asleep and unaware, we can whittle
down their defenses with relative
ease!
Kerrigan :
Clever. How long after our initial
attack can we expect them to
regroup and retaliate?
Duran :
I'd say in 6 minutes.
Kerrigan :
That only gives us enough time to
launch a surprise attack against one
base. But it is a sound plan.
Cerebrate, feel free to launch your
initial attack against either base.
Failure is not an option. Slaughter
them all in my name!
Comment: There's another mission like this in The Frozen Throne and they're good in forcing the player to make a tactical choice and get a head start in destroying either of their enemies.
Mission Start
*** Beginning of the mission (surprise attack) ***
CIVILIAN:
What's up?
CIVILIAN:
How y'all doin?
*** 6 minutes after initial attack ***
MARINE:
All units prepare for retaliation! Kerrigan caught us with
our pants down, but it's time to start givin' some back!
Comment: And the phrase 'caught with your pants down' surely needs no explanation ... though it may come across as being more obscene to a person in the United Kingdom than elsewhere.
KERRIGAN:
Continue your attack, Cerebrate. Their defenses won't
last long against us.
*** Encounter with Fenix ***
FENIX:
This is betrayal, most foul, Kerrigan! We were fools to
have gone along with this charade!
KERRIGAN:
You're right, Fenix. I used you to get the job done, and
you played along just like I knew you would. You Protoss
are all so headstrong and predictable, you are your own
worst enemies.
Comment: Kerrigan has already done this to the main Protoss on Shakuras and now she has done it again. She's completely used them.
FENIX:
That's ironic. I can remember Tassadar teaching you a
very similar lesson on Char.
KERRIGAN:
I took that lesson to heart, Praetor. Now, are you ready
to die a second time?
Comment: I guess that she has took that lesson to heart. Back on Char, in the first zerg campaign, Tassadar taught it to Kerrigan, that being predictable means you can be your own worst enemy since your actions can eventually lead to you unwittingly harming yourself.
However, it wasn't Fenix's direct actions that lead to this - Kerrigan is the direct cause. I think there's a difference between one inadvertently wandering into peril and another causing it upon someone.
FENIX:
The Khala awaits me, Kerrigan. And although I am
prepared to face my destiny, you'll not find me
easy prey!
KERRIGAN:
Then that shall be your epitaph.
Comment: An epitaph is, as we all know, a short piece of text on a gravestone.
("I told you I was ill" - Spike Milligan)
*** Kill Fenix ***
RAYNOR:
Fenix! No!
KERRIGAN:
What are you about worried, Jim? He died the way all
Protoss hope to: in combat!
Comment: Is that all she knows of the Protoss with regards to dying?
RAYNOR:
He died because you betrayed him. How many noble
souls do you need to consume before you're satisfied?
How many more people need to die before you realize
what you've become?
KERRIGAN:
You don't even know what you're talking about, Jim!
Comment: Is that really all she has to say? I think she's acting on instinct and isn't particularly thinking about her actions.
Jim's right - Kerrigan caused the battle that resulted in Fenix getting killed. It wasn't a natural death, in a sense - it was by her doing. She used her free will to decide that it should happen.
His other comments are particular biting, almost as if he's prepared them for this very instance. Based on his conflicted feelings for her, maybe he hasn't been able to imagine it, but now he has to face the facts.
When is enough actually enough for Kerrigan? Is she killing for killing's sake now? She has that much power that, it goes without saying, it's hard to have a limit and know when to let go.
RAYNOR:
Don't I? I'll see you dead for this, Kerrigan. For Fenix
and all the others who got caught between you and
your mad quest for power!
KERRIGAN:
Tough talk, Jimmy. But I don't think you have what it
takes to be a killer.
Comment: ... What? Raynor isn't a killer? We've personally commanded him to kill members of every species in the original Terran campaign!
Seriously, I'm not sure why she says that - either the script writer lapsed in concentration, or it's intentional, which means that Kerrigan's attempts to argue are simply weak.
If it's the former, I think it would have been better for her to take a jab at Raynor's feelings for her, whether or not he's gotten over her (as much as you can with a woman who has been infested and twisted beyond belief by an alien power, anyway). Raynor has finally shifted from being suspicious of Kerrigan to downright hating her. Things have really changed now.
RAYNOR:
It may not be tomorrow, darlin'. It may not even happen
with an army at my back. But rest assured: I'm the man
who's going to kill you some day. I'll be seein' you.
Comment: Kick ass.
This is actually the last we see of Raynor (though he is briefly mentioned in the epilogue to the campaign) but it's as good an exit as could be imagined for the long-term story.
From here he leads his band of men, Raynor's Raiders, around the sector, eventually coming to the point of barely getting by through the trading of archeological artefacts, before falling into alcoholism and depression. Presumably, one of the main dramatic moments of Wings of Liberty will be Raynor picking himself up and returning to his old form. Here's hoping...
*** Encounter Duke ***
DUKE:
Well, well, well. If it isn't little Kerrigan. I had a feelin'
we'd be meetin' each other again. You've got a lot to
answer for, little girl.
Comment: Duke at his usual best - patronising and somewhat with authority. At least his character is consistent.
KERRIGAN:
General Duke. You know I always wanted to have you
killed. This is kind of exciting for me.
Comment: Kerrigan never did like Duke back when she was in the Sons of Korhal, but not to the extent of wanting to murder him.
DUKE:
Do your worst then, girl. You ain't takin' Edmund Duke
without a fight!
Comment: I'm surprised this isn't a quote from a John Wayne movie (Feel free to prove me wrong), but it's exactly what I'd expect from Duke. Despite his last array of defeat, he's still determined to fight.
*** Kill Duke ***
MENGSK:
Kerrigan, you murdering bitch! We had a deal!
KERRIGAN:
Oh, come on, Arcturus. Did you really think I'd allow you
to come into power again? You practically fed me to the
Zerg on Tarsonis! You're directly responsible for the hell
I've been through! Did you honestly think I'd let you get
away with that?
Comment: Does Kerrigan like it or not? Back in "Agent of the Swarm" she told Raynor:
"I'm one of the Zerg, now. And I like what I am. You can't imagine how this feels..."
Even though this was when she was bound to the Overmind's will, she still had free will of a sort. Is she just conflicted on the inside or what?
MENGSK:
But you said revenge was secondary to defeating
the UED!
KERRIGAN:
I lied. I liberated this planet because it was the UED's
primary staging point, not because I was under any
obligation to you. I used you to destroy the Psi Disrupter.
And now that I've got my Broods back, you're no longer
necessary for my plans. I think I'll leave you here,
Arcturus, among the ashes of your precious Dominion.
I want you to live to see me rise to power. And I want
you to always remember in your most private moments
that it was you who turned me loose in the first place.
Comment: She used the Protoss and Raynor, then she used Mengsk (even though she did need his psi emitters) and this shows she had it all planned out.
Leaving Mengsk to live is meant to be a prolonged torture for him. Indeed, as another emperor put it:
“Death is nothing, but to live defeated and inglorious is to die daily.” - Napoleon Bonaparte
As it turns out, Mengsk does rebuild his Dominion, quite successfully based on the media for StarCraft 2 that I've seen, but I suppose it would be boring if he didn't. Meanwhile, after Brood War, Kerrigan and her zerg go silent for around four years.
(Also, I can't help but imagine that first line is a reference to this scene in Commando.
Here's the full scene in a broader context - or if you just like 80s action movies then just get yourself the whole movie)
*** Destroy all enemy bases and kill Duke and Fenix ***
KERRIGAN:
It is done, Cerebrate. They've all been destroyed. Let
us return to Tarsonis to rest. For the first time since my
transfiguration I am wearied of the slaughter.
Comment: By the time of her 'transfiguration' she means her birth into the Swarm - and that's been a long time.
It probably is just part of the script and a reason to return to Tarsonis for the next mission, but one remote possibility is that the death's of two people Kerrigan has known, and the outburst from her former allies, has made her feel guilty or some sort of emotion. Maybe there is some semblence of humanity left in her?
Mission End
XZ-06. "FURY OF THE SWARM"
Kerrigan's Fortress, on the planet Tarsonis
Two days later
Mission Briefing
Objectives :
- Destroy the renegade zerg
Duran :
My Queen, our scouts have just
discovered a massive wave of Zerg
in high orbit. Hundreds of Zerg
have landed upon Tarsonis and are
even now approaching our location!
A number of our outposts are
already under attack by the
renegade Swarm!
Kerrigan :
So, the UED is testing out their
control of their pet Overmind. I had
hoped to lay low after we razed
Korhal, but it seems the UED is
intent on forcing my hand.
Duran :
Shall I rally your forces, my Queen?
Kerrigan :
Yes. We've got to defend our
remaining outposts and make sure
that the renegades can't gain a
foothold in our immediate vicinity.
Once we've secured our perimeter,
we'll begin to take the fight to their
hive clusters.
Mission Start
*** Beginning of the mission (awhile after the outposts are destroyed) ***
DURAN
My Queen, we have located a small Terran facility towards
the rear of the Renegade's landing zone. There appears to
be a number of UED scientists working within the compound,
but we are unable to determine the purpose of their
presence...
KERRIGAN
I know what they're up to. I suspected that the UED's
control of the Overmind was tenuous. Tarsonis is too
remote for them to maintain direct control over the Swarms,
so they've sent these 'scientists' to coordinate their attack.
DURAN
Cerebrate, focus your attack against the Terran facility.
All of the UED scientists must be killed. Only then will we
be able to finish off these Renegade Zerg.
NEW MISSION OBJECTIVES
- Kill all the UED Scientists
Mission End
Comment: There's not much to say about this mission - it's almost like it's filler, or simply to set up the next act of the campaign.
XZ-07. "DRAWING OF THE WEB"
Holding orbit over the planet Shakuras
Comment: Obviously, the title is referring to a spider creating a web.
Mission Briefing
Objectives :
- Bring Duran to each zerg beacon
- Duran must survive
Kerrigan :
Cerebrate, it's time we returned to
Shakuras. I have some unfinished
business with the Dark Templar
Matriarch, Raszagal. I'll need to steal
her from her tribe before we can
finally assault the Overmind on Char.
However, her defenders will not
simply allow us to take her away.
Duran :
The pylon clusters are generating
some sort of electromagnetic field
that is preventing our flyers from
maneuvering. We won't have any air
support at all.
Comment: I used to wonder: this isn't the Xel'Naga Temple? I thought the whole point of the temple's power was that it would prevent any zerg from touching Shakuras ever again?
Perhaps the temple needs to be charged for its attack, or Raszagal could have been exaggerating (partially as herself or completely through Kerrigan's manipulation).
Kerrigan :
Then we'll need some new
strategy...
Duran :
Perhaps it would be best if we
staged some kind of diversion, my
Queen, and claimed the Matriarch
during the confusion.
Kerrigan :
What did you have in mind, Duran?
Duran :
The Protoss outpost of Talematros
is built upon a large mesa and is
essentially impregnable to ground
attacks. However, Talematros is
fueled and supported by a number
of adjacent pylon clusters. I believe
that if we can cause a surge within
those pylon clusters, we can cause
Talematros' power grids to overload.
The resulting explosion will be the
perfect cover for retrieving the
Matriarch.
Kerrigan :
Clean, simple, devious. I like it. Make
it happen Duran. Cerebrate, you'll
provide cover for Duran as he
infiltrates the pylon clusters. Let
nothing stand in our way!
Mission Start
*** Bring Duran to the first beacon ***
DURAN
Pylon cluster set to overload.
*** Bring Duran to the second beacon ***
DURAN
Charges set.
*** Bring Duran to the third beacon ***
DURAN
Pylon cluster set to overload.
*** Bring Duran to the fourth beacon ***
DURAN
Charges set.
*** Bring Duran to the fifth beacon ***
DURAN
This cluster is ready to overload.
*** Activated all five beacons ***
DURAN
My Queen, the last charge is set. Talematros will explode
on your command.
KERRIGAN
Very well. Cerebrate, send my minions to the planet
and have them retrieve the Matriarch. Duran, ignite the
charges!
DURAN
Ignition commencing.
Mission End
Comment: It's a neat level on its own, as it forces players to adapt without the transport ability for Overlords or to make any zerg air units. It's also a good excuse to fight Protoss forces in the campaign, something that hasn't particularly happened so far.
XZ-08. "TO SLAY THE BEAST"
Infested platform over the planet Char
Kerrigan's base of operation
Comment: This title is a neat contrast to the UED's finale level, "To Chain the Beast". While level titles can be simple and effective ("Escape from Aiur"), I like the slightly more imaginative ones. I'm not sure what the exact term for this sort of English grammar, but this level, for example, describes the attempt to perform the act.
Mission Briefing
Objectives :
- Destroy the Overmind with
Dark Templar
- Must be able to have
Dark Templar
Kerrigan :
The time is finally upon us, my
minions, to destroy the wretched
Overmind and the last of its
Renegade Cerebrates. We can
count on the UED providing us with
heavy resistance, but not even they
can stand in our way. Now that
the Matriarch, Raszagal is in my
custody, I possess the means to
attack the Overmind with impunity.
Duran :
But my Queen, I thought only the
Dark Templar's energies could harm
the Overmind and its Cerebrates.
Even with the numerous Broods at
your command, any attack we launch
against the Renegades will be in
vain.
Kerrigan :
Not so, Duran. As a matter of fact,
I'm expecting my secret weapon to
be arriving very soon.
Duran :
As you say, my Queen. But I still
don't understand wh-
We are receiving a transmission
from an unidentified Protoss
Carrier...
Kerrigan :
That's what I love about the
Protoss... They're so punctual.
Comment: Tee-heh!
On a small note, Kerrigan is still sarcastic, no matter how much she has changed, whether at her current plight or through the manipulation of her enemies.
Zeratul :
Kerrigan, this is Zeratul. I demand
to know why you've taken our
Matriarch.
Kerrigan :
Actually, Zeratul, she's not the one
I'm truly interested in. I stole her
to get to you. You see, I need you
and your brethren to kill the
Overmind for me. The only way I
had of assuring your cooperation
was to take away that which you
value most. However, I give you my
word that once you've killed the
Overmind, I'll allow her to return to
you.
Zeratul :
As if your word held any value...
Raszagal :
Zeratul, my faithful servant. You
must aid Kerrigan in this endeavor.
The Overmind is our common
enemy. It must be destroyed to
insure that our people will survive!
Zeratul :
You ask me to aid this vile
creature?
Raszagal :
I do not ask this for myself. Nor do
I ask it on Kerrigan's behalf. I ask
you to do this for our people,
Zeratul. Obey me as you always
have... Trust in my judgement.
Zeratul :
Very well, Matriarch. The
Overmind will die this day.
Comment: Kerrigan psychically pulls the strings of the Matriarch once more, though I imagine player's are suspecting what's going on at this point - Raszagal is bending over backwards to work towards Kerrigan's goal, just like in the Protoss campaign. As I believe I've noted before, Zeratul himself is one of the most powerful Protoss alive, yet he is oblivious to this. He's certainly not playing along - either Kerrigan really is that dominant or he has significant faith in Raszagal.
Mission Start
*** Kill the Overmind ***
ZERATUL
It's done, Kerrigan. The Overmind is dead as you wished.
Now I demand that you release the Matriarch at once!
KERRIGAN
Of course. Raszagal, do you wish to return to your tribe?
RASZAGAL
No, my Queen. I wish only to serve you and remain at your side.
ZERATUL
What treachery is this, Kerrigan? This pathetic creature
cannot possibly be Raszagal!
KERRIGAN
Ha ha ha. I promised that I'd allow her to return to you, Zeratul.
But it looks to me like she doesn't want to go.
ZERATUL
You have corrupted her! Somehow you have poisoned her
thoughts. Restore her to her rightful self, or you will pay dearly
for this offense, Kerrigan!
Comment: Zeratul finally catches on...
KERRIGAN
All right, Zeratul, you've got me. I made your Matriarch my
slave long before I joined you on Shakuras. She made the
mistake of underestimating my power just like everyone else
did. And now she's paid the price.
With her as my puppet I was able to eradicate the Renegades
on Shakuras, and use you to kill the Overmind. And as you can
see, your leader belongs to me now. Not bad, huh?
Comment: Kerrigan's game plan is revealed. It appears that Kerrigan enslaved Raszagal before the UED got involved. She intentionally decided to do so as she knew it would one day be useful.
Everyone truly has under-estimated her power, but being able to enslave one of the oldest and most powerful Protoss alive is something else. If you can't remotely begin to imagine it, how can people not under-estimate her?
Once again, she has fantastically manipulated people to do the work for her. The way she plays with Raszagal's behaviour really shows the extent of her power, as well as her willingness to mock Zeratul.
Power and responsibility and all that. Kerrigan was never meant to have all of that power - it's like a child exhibiting god-like powers.
ZERATUL
We shall see, Kerrigan. We shall see...
Comment: Zeratul lends that line from Aldaris, once more suggesting that nothing is certain and things are yet to be decided. Plus that, despite their differences, he did learn something from him.
Mission End
Comment: I think it's interesting that the campaign could have ended there - the other characters have been beaten, Kerrigan is free of the new Overmind and the UED now only have their conventional forces to stand against her. It would have been easy, if unsatisfying, to wrap things up there.
XZ-09. "THE RECKONING"
Comment: 'Reckoning' is one of those words I see while growing up yet was never certain what it really meant. I thought it was always associated with Christianity and it partially is - the 'Day of reckoning' is a term used to describe the Last Judgment. Meanwhile, the word on its own refers to 'a settling of account' which does match the challenge that the player faces in the level.
Somewhere on the planet Char
Six hours later
Mission Briefing
Objectives :
- Destroy the Protoss base within 30
minutes
- Recover the Matriarch and Zeratul
Duran :
My Queen, with the Overmind and
its cerebrates destroyed, all of the
Zerg in this sector have reverted
to your direct control. The
remnants of the UED fleet have
fled the planet, but I have no idea
how many functional ships they still
possess.
We have finished relocating your
primary hive clusters to this orbital
platform. However, we do have a
problem. Somehow, Zeratul and his
brethren were able to bypass our
defenses and steal their Matriarch
away from us.
Kerrigan :
Damn Zeratul! He is a formidable
adversary. Where have they run to,
Duran?
Duran :
Our scouts report that they have
regrouped with a number of Protoss
survivors on the surface of Char.
The Matriarch is being held within a
stasis cell, leading me to suspect
that the Protoss will attempt to
take her home to Shakuras.
Kerrigan :
Heh. They still believe that she can
be saved from my influence...
Zeratul will be very dissapointed to
learn that Raszagal is beyond
redemption. How much time before
their fleet is ready to debark for
Shakuras?
Comment: Kerrigan is very much aware of her power to dominate a mind - she knows that Raszagal is completely bound to her will.
Duran :
They will be capable of dimensional
recall within thirty minutes, my
Queen.
Kerrigan :
That may be all the time we need.
Cerebrate, mobilize all of my broods
and send them to the surface of
Char. I want you to bring both the
Matriarch and Zeratul to me alive.
Terminate the remaining Protoss
with extreme prejudice.
Comment: As we see in the finale level, sending all of her broods turns out to be hasty and leaves her exposed. What was she saying about you being your own worst enemy?
Mission Start
*** Destroy the Protoss base within 30 minutes ***
ZERATUL
Damn you, Kerrigan, for what I must do!
RASZAGAL
Thank you, Zeratul... You have freed me from
her vile control at last. You have always served
me with honor... Thus I must ask you... to watch
over my tribe... Into your hands I give the future.
Comment: It's another speech, like when Stukov died (though shorter), where the character is fatally wounded but manages to squeeze out their final words before dying. It's daft - but necessary for the scene.
KERRIGAN
I can hardly believe this! You've killed your own Matriarch!
ZERATUL
Better that I killed her, than let her live as your slave, Kerrigan.
KERRIGAN
Well, I have misjudged you, warrior. You are worthy,
indeed. You are free to go.
ZERATUL
What?
KERRIGAN
I said, you are free to go. I've already taken
your honor. I'll let you live, because I know that
from now on; your every waking moment will be
torture. You'll never be able to forgive yourself for
what I've forced you to do. And that, Zeratul, is a
better revenge than I could have ever dreamed of.
Comment: "Am I not merciful?!"
Like with Raynor and Mengsk in the past, she's allowed Zeratul to live, yet it's not like she's a compassionate person any more - she's ruthlessly murdered thousands, if not millions, as well as Aldaris, Fenix and Duke, as well as ultimately causing Stukov and Raszagal's own demise. Now she wants Mengsk and Zeratul to live in disgrace and shame for the rest of their lives. It's far less than actual mercy if anything - it's more that she wants the satisfaction of watching them feel crushed and in despair. There's a clear difference there and it certainly shows that, if anything, Kerrigan's empathy has become warped. She is one evil bitch.
ZERATUL
You will regret this decision, Kerrigan. We shall
meet again.
Comment: We know that this occurs close to the beginning of StarCraft 2 as revealed at BlizzCon 2008. The cinematic shows Zeratul confronting Kerrigan in some underground chamber, near a Xel'Nagan temple of some sort, but we do not see the outcome.
Based on his talk with Raynor in the StarCraft 2 Terran campaign, he survived but was badly wounded.
BONUS LEVEL ACTIVATED!
Comment: Players get this if they beat The Reckoning in under 25 minutes.

Were the Xel'Naga originally the combination of Protoss and zerg? Upon their return, do the Xel'naga mean to destroy the other races? Did they predict their own assimilation into the zerg Swarm?
These questions will eventually be answered in StarCraft 2.

XZ-10. "OMEGA"
Infested platform over the planet Char
Kerrigan's base of operations
Mission Briefing
Objectives :
- Destroy all enemy bases
Kerrigan :
Cerebrate, our scouts have just
identified three separate fleets
approaching this platform. With
Duran having disapeared, and the
bulk of my broods still on the
surface of Char, you'll need to hold
off the invaders by yourself.
Comment: Duran having disappeared due to the events in Dark Origin, but based on his actions it is likely due to his further plans and schemes. Did he 'serve' Kerrigan to ensure she remains leader of the zerg? That would make sense if he later plans to manipulate her or somehow take control.
Mengsk :
You sound worried, Kerrigan. Have I
caught you at a bad time?
Kerrigan :
Not at all, Arcturus. How'd you
manage to scrape up your new
fleet? Been raiding the salvage
dump again?
Mengsk :
I called in a few favors. Made a few
concessions. You'd be surprised to
see how many special interest
groups in this sector want to see
you dead.
Kerrigan :
I'm sorry to have to dissapoint your
new friends, Arcturus. But you
really shouldn't have attempted this
stunt. It'll take more than your
three little fleets to bring me down.
Mengsk :
Three fleets?
Kerrigan :
Don't play dumb, Arcturus. I've
already spotted the other two
fleets.
Comment: Ho ho!
Artanis :
Kerrigan, this is Artanis. My
brethren and I have come to avenge
the deaths of Fenix, the Matriarch,
and all of the other Protoss who
fell before the Swarm! It is long
past time you paid for your crimes
against our people.
Kerrigan :
When it rains, it pours...
Mengsk :
Hah ha ha... The Protoss, too! Care
to take a guess as to who the third
fleet is?
Kerrigan :
No need to guess. It's DuGalle and
the remainder of the UED fleet.
DuGalle :
That is correct, Kerrigan. This is
Admiral DuGalle. I am giving you one
last chance to surrender your
forces, and submit to the sovereign
authority of the United Earth
Directorate.
Kerrigan :
Gee, that's a tough one, Admiral.
You'll have let me think for a
minute... You know, Admiral, I think
I'll just massacre your remaining
troops now and watch you die in
agony. How would that be?
DuGalle :
You vastly underestimate me, my
dear.
Kerrigan :
I don't think so, Admiral. You see, at
this point... I'm pretty much the
Queen Bitch of the Universe. And
not all of your little soldiers or
space ships will stand in my way
again.
DuGalle :
So be it.
Comment: It's almost like the writers are blatant in their way of setting up the finale level - "You want a challenge? Here you go Mr Player, fight all these guys off and you WIN!".
Seriously, it is at least a suitable finale and a heck of a challenge. It also concludes the status of the Dominion, Protoss and UED, rendering them beaten.
Mission Start
*** Destroy Dominion forces (red) ***
MENGSK
Congratulations, Kerrigan. You've beaten me again. Just
remember that I'll be out there... Waiting for you to slip up. Because
sooner or later you'll make a mistake. And when you do...
*** Destroy Protoss forces (blue) ***
ARTANIS
Savor this victory, Kerrigan! For the Protoss will never forget your
treachery. We shall be watching you.
*** Destroy UED forces (white) ***
DUGALLE
Kerrigan, I am prepared to offer terms of surrender. It is my wish
that you allow my men to live-
KERRIGAN
You're not in a position to offer me anything, Admiral. And I don't
take prisoners. I'll tell you what... Turn your remaining ships around
and start heading back towards the Earth. I'll let you have a head
start, before I send the Swarms after you. It'll be interesting sport to
see how far you get before you die.
Comment: Unlike the other moments when she offers mercy, she has none for DuGalle and the UED. Is it because she hates them for being a significant threat to her plans? Or is she erratic?
Mission End
Comment: Despite being caught off guard, Kerrigan was still able to win and defeat the triumvirate of her enemies.
The campaign ends with a cinematic, "The Ascension".
There are two speeches in it, the first by Kerrigan amid scenes of destruction.
Kerrigan:
Once again I stand atop the broken bodies of my enemies...
Victorious but not unscarred.
The Earth-borne Directorate has been destroyed.
And the Overmind lies dead and trampled beneath the ashes of Char.
As for my unlikely allies, I think that I shall allow them a reprieve.
For in time I will seek to test their resolve, and their strengths.
They will all be mine in the end, for I am the Queen of Blades.
None shall ever dispute my rule again.
Comment: What is there to say? Kerrigan has won. For now. She's happy to let her former allies survive for the time being, purely so she can fight them again in the future - possibly so that they have a chance to grow stronger, as eventually she will assimilate them into her Swarm.
Then, shortly before DuGalle commits suicide he sends a letter to his wife:
DuGalle:
Dearest Helena,
By now the news of our defeat has reached the Earth. The
creatures we were sent here to tame are untameable---And
the colonies we were sent to reclaim have proven to be
stronger than we anticipated.
Whatever you may hear about what has happened out here,
know this: Alexei did not die a hero. I killed him---my
pride killed him. And now my pride has consumed me as well.
You will never see me again, Helena.
Tell our children that I love them, and that their father
died in defense of their future.
Au revior
Comment: Absolutely tragic, even if the UED possibly represent the worst of mankind. DuGalle knows he is defeated and decides to end his life by his own hands.
While I'd like to think DuGalle's pride is the UED's general disregard for the fate of the colonists (as we see one of the marines from the intro movie), it more seems to be more for DuGalle being blinded into believing Stukov was a traitor. Maybe it's both, where his best friend's death made him realise what he's done.
EPILOGUE
Shortly after DuGalle's defeat, the remainder
of the UED Fleet was overtaken by Kerrigan's
forces and eradicated. No UED vessel ever
made it back to Earth to report what had
transpired.
With his rag-tag fleet beaten and crippled,
Arcturus Mengsk fled back to Korhal to lick
his wounds and plan the reconstruction of his
Terran Dominion...
Artanis and the Protoss survivors returned
to Shakuras to begin rebuilding their once
glorious civilization...
Zeratul and James Raynor went their
separate ways and have not been heard from
since their departure.
And alone, floating on a dark platform above
the burnt-out planet of Char, Sarah Kerrigan,
the Queen of Blades, sat and lorded over the
ravenous Swarms. Unable to shake the feeling
that a great threat loomed just over the
horizon, Kerrigan could only stare off into the
vastness of space where she beheld a great
void. Or perhaps a reflection of a hollow
victory and of the trials yet to come...

Comment: It is done. The campaign is concluded, as the Dominion and Protoss forces are defeated while the UED expeditionary force is destroyed.
This is no glorious, hard-won victory, it's just the establishment of Kerrigan's dominance of the sector. She's manipulated practically everyone and destroyed anyone who who stood in her way. She used her power to dominate one of the most powerful Protoss alive and commands every zerg in the sector. Despite this, I think Kerrigan is conflicted - there are times when she is acting on impulse and instinct, then acting with emotion elsewhere.
Despite everything she has done, she feels empty, either a leftover portion of her humanity has regret for what she's done, or simply that her work was ultimately too easy, given her power and abilities.
The cinematic from StarCraft 2 of Zeratul meeting Raynor suggests that Kerrigan's fate is tied into the return of the Xel'Naga. As a human-zerg hybrid, I'm unsure how this will work - is it her ability to control the zerg to fight back the Xel'Naga? Duran did say that her assimilation sped up the progress of his work - how so?
Will everyone seek her aid, despite her wanton treachery? Will she have a chance at redemption? This would go back on my thought that it would be her who would seek the help of the other factions, but they would turn away due to her past sins.
We're left with more questions, such is life. If I have to make one prediction for StarCraft 2, however, it's that Kerrigan won't survive StarCraft 2 come the end of the Protoss campaign.
We shall see.
And we're done. I had no idea it would take this long to do the commentary, each campaign has taken many, many hours. Thank you for very much for reading - feel free to post any thoughts or feedback on the Samods forum.
