WarCraft 1 Conversion

IN RETROSPECT...

The WarCraft 1 Conversion (aka 'WC1Con') was an ambitious project by my friend Rommel and myself to recreate the first WarCraft game in WarCraft 3. Originally I realised that we were both making WC1 campaigns (It made sense as some characters would have a history dating back to its lore in the official time-line) and managed to attempt to unite our work. Exploring the original lore was popular among several campaign and mod makers as it was undeveloped in the original game due to the limits of the engine that Blizzard used. There were also several aspects of WC3 that people didn't like as well as simply the thrill of remoulding the original atmosphere of the game that introduced people to the world of Azeroth.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself with this project - designing WarCraft 1 to match WarCraft 3 (The first game was very basically detailed) was incredible fun, far more than I ever expected. Rommel's technical work was fantastic and consistently surprising in quality while many people pitched in ideas.

As always, the project was indeed very ambitious but I don't believe any of us expected it to come to fruition, as this was far more than 'just' a campaign, it would be a massive total conversion along with campaigns for the orc and human sides. Eventually Rommel, as he always does, took things to amazing heights and merged his work for a full-blown mod\campaign, Heart of Storms, that went far beyond the original WC1. As I mentioned in my 'final release post' (Which is what it sounds like - the post I made when the conversion was officially cancelled), the guys at Realm Design are still developing their own awesome WarCraft 1 project, Dawn of Chaos.

Magic's Final Release Post:

"Thanks very much to Rommel and everyone else (Xaran, Loknar, Mantis - too many posters to mention) who has helped with this. I really wish I had the time to go over all the loving work and support, but I'm actually tired and hungry so I'll keep it short.

It's at least rewarding to know that the original goal of the WC1Con was to help people get a bunch of models, sounds and files for their WC campaigns, whether or not they were set during the Age of Chaos or elsewhere.

Best of luck to the lads over at Realm Design who are doing their own WC1 conversion, entitled Dawn of Chaos.

And now ... the files."
